In the book of John chapter three, there is a very interesting account of a Jewish leader who came to Jesus and told Him that he knew that He was from God. Jesus took this event to share with him and subsequently with us one of the most important teachings in the whole Word of God. Jesus told him (Nicodemus) in verse three “unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” I don’t know if you are familiar with the term “born again” or “new birth” or not, but it’s for sure Nicodemus wasn’t. He quickly told Jesus he couldn’t see how this could happen. He could only see in the natural realm so he didn’t understand. We must look in the spiritual realm if we are going to understand how a man can be born again. Jesus said in verse six “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” The new birth takes place in the spiritual realm. This is not hard to believe when we understand that we are a spiritual being. In Genesis 1:26-27 it says we were made in the image and likeness of God. We are a spirit, we have soul and we live in a body. We are spirit and God is Spirit.
Ezekiel 36:26 says “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” This Old Testament scripture is foretelling what we would have when our savior Jesus Christ would come and die for us. We would have a new spirit (a reborn spirit.) John 1:13 says “children born not of natural descent, not of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” Wow, born of God. God is the one that gives us the power to be born again. Our part is to believe. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Let’s look at Titus 3:5. “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.” It’s not our goodness that causes us to be born again, it’s His mercy. It’s through hearing and receiving God’s Word that we are born again. Romans 10:8-9 “But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith which we preach. That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Believe it and say it and it will be yours.
When we are born again we become a new creation. We are not just forgiven we become a completely new person. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature, the old has gone, the new has come.” The new creature mentioned here is our spirit born again. When we are born again our old dead spirit (separated from God) is made alive ( God now lives in us). We are no longer like the Old Testament saints, Jesus has taken up residence in our recreated spirit. Our relationship with the Father is now complete.
The next step is to train our soul (the seat of the mind, will, emotions and conscience) to come in line with the truth of God’s Word.
Romans 12: 1-2 “I beseech you therefor, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
If we do this we can then offer our body as a living sacrifice thus making our salvation complete.
To walk in total victory in our Christian walk we do the following.
1. We accept Jesus as our Savior (the One who paid our sin debt at Calvary through His mercy and Grace).
2. We renew our mind, will, emotions, and conscience, (our soul) to be in align with the truth of God’s Word.
3. We offer our bodies as a living sacrifice.
More about walking in victory in another teaching.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the truth of His Word be with you.
